Dust is Dust

Hello, and welcome to an occasional report from CPU:798, the newest and most interesting gallery in 798 Art District, Beijing.

First allow me to introduce myself. My name is Edward Sanderson and I manage the operations and programming of the space. I’m originally from London, UK, with a background in Art practice and theory. I moved to Beijing at the end of 2007 to help set up CPU:798 with the help of a group of Chinese partners.

The Gallery

CPU:798 is situated right in the heart of the 798, close to UCCA and Long March Space. We have created the gallery primarily to focus on contemporary Chinese and international photography. We also aim to extend our remit into new media art – we want to create a space that nurtures something a little different to what you might normally see in 798. At a time when official sanction is making the area feel a little conservative, we hope to inject a some new life into the district.

Exhibitions

Dust is DustFor our inaugural project, we are delighted to be able to present a new set of works by the young Chinese artist, Wang Yuyang, entitled 'Dust is Dust.'

This new series relates to the large installation Wang presented last year in the show ‘Sustainable Imagination’ at the Arario space, which investigated the American Moon Landings of 1969. He now takes the process of investigation out of the ‘macro’ seen there and into the ‘micro,’ with a set of large-format photographs of dust particles at extremely high magnification, produced using a scanning electron microscope. Dust is DustThese views into an unseen world are shown with a number of crystal balls set into the gallery floor, with allusions to the prediction of the future by gazing into their depths. The glass balls are themselves embedded with the dust seen in the pictures and suggest that the science that produces and uses these images is potentially as much a matter of faith as the mysticism that justifies the crystal balls.

So do come and visit! We are close to Long March Space and below Chinese Contemporary, and are open from 1pm to 6pm or by appointment.
