translation issues 翻译的问题

Posted by Wei Weng on Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Yesterday, I received an email with Chinese translation for David Spalding’s mapping essay.   I must admit I felt pretty lost reading the Chinese text.  I’ve already tweaked other texts related to Antimapping (artist statement and press release), and I am wondering if I should dabble with David’s mapping.

昨天收到翻译的邮件, 是丁达韦写的一片关于映像的短文。说真的,我真看不懂。  我已经花时间自己翻译反映像的文章(包括展览叙述和新闻稿), 我想是不是应该自己花点时间翻译丁达韦的映像。

(from Hu Fang,19:48:35)

Hu Fang: How was your first day at the gallery?

Wei Weng: Today, I did not make any work in the gallery space.  I hope more people will have the opportunity to enjoy an empty space, with no work inside, because tomorrow things will change

HF: So you did not do anything at the gallery?

Wei Weng: Yes

HF: How did you manage to do ‘nothing’ in the space?

Wei Weng:  I wanted to emphasize the fact that it was the first day of exhibition, so empty!

HF: What I meant was: even doing nothing you did something

Wei Weng:  I actually took some people around to see exhibitions this afternoon

HF: This is not playing-with-words

(胡昉的短信,19:48:35)

胡昉:第一天在画廊的感觉如何?

翁维:今天画廊没有发生任何作品, 我希望更多人有机会享受没有作品的空间, 因为明天会变

胡:今天你在画廊没干什么

翁:对

胡:你在那儿怎么“没干什么”?:)

翁:为了突出第一天,空着

胡:我的意思是:空也许是你干了什么

翁:对, 其实我下午带人看展览去了

胡:这不是文字游戏

1st day at gallery 画廊的第一天

Does it make you feel like an insider when you accompany someone through an empty gallery space?

陪人看过一个空的画廊,是否就意味着你步入内幕了?
